Maternity Photos in Jacksonville Fl | The Ultimate How-To-Guide
8/04/2026
You’re expecting! Congratulations! You want to plan the perfect, artful, and non-traditional maternity photos of your dreams. The idea of bringing your vision to life seems overwhelming, and you don’t know where to start. This guide will help you plan your maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl in a way that is simple, straight-forward, and fits your budget. Documenting this special season deserves to be carefully planned, fun, and worth the investment. Most importantly, you are capturing memories that will go through generations. As a Jacksonville Maternity Photographer, I believe maternity photos should feel like a reflection of you: artistic, emotional, and timeless.
When is the best time to take Maternity Photography in Jacksonville Florida?
You just found out that you’re expecting- this really is the start of planning for your photos! You’re wondering when is too early or too late to schedule your photos, and how many weeks to schedule them around. This is one of my most common questions.
Ultimately, when scheduling your maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl, the ideal time for most is between 28-34 weeks pregnant. I would say that the sweet spot is usually around 30 weeks. This timeframe usually works well for moms who are expecting their first and don’t know what size their belly will be in advance, and also for moms who have had multiple pregnancies, and already have an idea.
The most important thing is choosing a tome when you feel confident, comfortable, and will be able to enjoy the experience.
When Should You Book a Jacksonville Maternity Photographer?
In my experience as a Jacksonville Maternity Photographer, you want to book your maternity photography session as early as possible. Waiting until the last minute does not allow a lot of time for planning, therefore resulting in a session that feels rushed and overwhelming.
I recommend reaching out to during your second trimester. Around 20 weeks, although you can schedule as early as you’d like. If you’re looking to schedule pregnancy announcement photos- the timing would be a lot earlier. Checkout this article that I wrote if you’d like to dive in to planning your pregnancy announcement photos here.
Booking your maternity photos far enough in advance gives you enough time to:
Plan your wardrobe (extremely important)
Choose the perfect Jacksonville location.
Creating and planning a creative vision or concept
Coordinating your partner and/or other children’s outfits
Scheduling professional hair and makeup if desired
Planning your maternity and newborn photography sessions together
A maternity session is not something you want to feel rushed through. Especially if you dream of artful images or an editorial concept- it takes time and planning with your photographer.
What Should I Wear for Maternity Photography in Jacksonville, Florida?
Planning out wardrobe for yourself, and especially if you have others involved in the session to plan for as well- can be extremely daunting, and often avoided until the last minute. Styling plays THE MOST important role in creating images that feel elevated, artful, and editorial. Picking out pieces that are flattering, yet make you feel beautiful and comfortable.
For an editorial maternity photography session, I love pieces that create movement, texture, and shape. For the concept, bold colors can also be curated well. The range of options for maternity outfits is so wide when it comes to artful, and documentary photos. But here are a few of my recommended styles:
Two piece dresses: If you are comfortable with showing belly, Two-piece dresses photograph so well. Whether they are flowy or form-fitting. Shops like Free People, Altar’d State, and Princess Polly, are just a few shops that have nice quality and affordable two piece dresses. You could even choose a maxi skirt with a separate crop top or flowy shirt that opens. A tucked in, oversized sweater and a maxi skirt are one of my favorite looks for the fall/winter seasons.
Flowing Dresses: If you do not want to show bare belly, flowing dresses whether long or short, are also good options. Dresses that have texture will add very good depth to your images. Think about a long linen dress with detailing, or a short tank top flowing dress with Hunter Boots to go with a garden or farm photo concept.
Form-Fitting Dresses: I love these kinds of dresses for a studio maternity photo session. Outdoor editorial concepts with a backdrop also fit so well with long form-fitting dresses. They beautifully highlight your growing belly without having to show bare belly. A lot of moms worry about showing their shape in pregnancy, but I love to stress that your bump is the focus of this season, so to rock that dress if thats what you want!
Loungewear: This styling option is specific to a concept. If you want at-home maternity photos, choosing longewear or simple/plain pieces can fit into that laid-back vision. Think an oversized white tee with white ruffle shorts, and a sun hate- watering the garden with your loved ones. Think linen pants with a button up shirt that is slightly un-buttoned enough to show a little belly. This is where having a concept in mind comes to play!
Denim: The un-buttoned jeans with a flowy opened top to show belly. You could even go the extra mile with a statement head scarf- or if you want to go for the 90’s feel concept with your family- the double denim for the whole fam is a vibe right now! The possibilities are endless.
Choosing Colors for Your Maternity Session
I used to be a strict believer of only wearing neutrals for everything. Now, with having an editorial-style and non-traditional approach to my sessions- I believe that any color or certain patterns can photograph well and make an artful statement if it’s curated and styled thoughtfully and intentionally. One thing to keep in mind are the natural surroundings and locations around Jacksonville, St Augustine and surrounding areas. The goal is not to match your location, but for your outfit to not clash color-wise.
Some colors that photograph beautifully are: soft neutrals, earth tones, bold primary colors when appropriate, and elegant monochromatic looks.
What Should My Partner or other Child(ren) Wear?
When styling your partner or the rest of your family, make sure that you start with yourself. That makes it easy to coordinate everyone else. The main focus is you and your growing belly, so your outfit is the most important and should make the biggest statement. If your outfit is on the bolder side as far as texture or color, try to keep everyones outfits more simple. Some great shops that I recommend for men or children’s clothing are: Old Navy, Fostered Collection for kids, H&M, and Zara.
What are the Best Places for Maternity Sessions around Jacksonville Florida?
Choosing the right location is also another big and exciting parts of planning your maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl. The location sets the tone for your images and helps create a gallery that feels connected to your story.
Jacksonville offers so many beautiful options for maternity photos, from coastal beaches, historic neighborhoods, to open fields, farms, and intimate in-home sessions. The location isn’t about finding what’s best or most popular- but rather the place that matches the vision or concept you have for your images.
As a documentary and editorial-style maternity photographer in Jacksonville Fl, I love locations that allow for movement, storytelling, emotion, and connection. Instead of looking for places as a simple backdrop, I look for places that allow for walking, embracing, and slowing down. Here are a few of my favorite types of locations:
Jacksonville Beach Maternity Photos: You can never go wrong with one of Jacksonville’s beaches for your session. The beach is an easy backdrop to create any kind of concept for your photos. Beach maternity sessions are perfect for moms who love being barefoot, coastal vibes, soft natural colors, and a relaxed, organic feel to your images. Some of my favorite beaches in Jacksonville are: Vilano Beach, Guana, Fort Clinch, and Amelia Island. The beaches are not as crowded, and offer other details like rocks, green foliages, dunes, and nicer sand. The beach also allows for a lot of movement like walking, wind blowing the dress, and getting feet into the water.
Open Fields and Natural Locations: These kinds of locations are probably my favorite. I love the way greenery looks as a backdrop. For an editorial maternity session with an earthy and artistic feel, open fields are such a beautiful option. These types of locations in Jacksonville offer an intimate and cinematic look. Field sessions work beautifully with moms who enjoy a more editorial aesthetic, light castings from the sun through the trees, and concept ideas like a picnic style maternity photos, or having a backdrop stand and sheet. Some of my favorite open fields are Camp Milton and Sheffield Regional Park.
In Home Maternity Sessions in Jacksonville Fl: While outdoor maternity photos are beautiful, many moms love the intimacy of an in-home session. An at-home maternity session captures this season in a raw, and organic way. This makes for the perfect atmosphere for personal-feeling concepts such as morning routine photos, baking or cooking with the kids, or watering your plants outside while watching your kids play.
A Jacksonville Photography Studio: Studio maternity photography is so beautiful. It’s a great option if you want a more simple and plain background, or not wanting weather to play a role in your images. Studios are also perfect for an editorial maternity photo session. A lot of maternity photographers have recommended studios that they like to use. Two of my favorites are Luxury Point Studio and Jax Mini Sessions Studio. Studios require a separate booking process and are not usually included in your photographer’s session fees.

How to Prepare for Your Jacksonville Maternity Photo Session
Preparing for your maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl does not need to be overwhelming. The goal is to create an experience where you feel relaxed, confident, and present.
Here are a few ways you can prepare:
Schedule Hair and Makeup: This is not a requirement for maternity photography. You can do your own hair and makeup if you wish, and your photos will still turn out beautiful. However, for those who’d like to hire an HMUA, make sure that you book this service in advance. This is a separate service that requires a separate booking process.
Plan Your Outfit Ahead of Time: Avoid waiting until the week of your session to decide what you want to wear. As soon as your book your Jacksonville Maternity Photographer, I recommend immediately planning the vision around your outfit, and looking for all of the pieces you want for your outfit. This gives you time to receive any online orders early enough in case of any delays in shipping, trying the outfit on to ensure you love it and feel comfortable in everything, choosing accessories, coordinating your partner’s outfit and/or kids, and to consider the location and season. Many maternity photographers, including myself, offer styling guidance to help create a cohesive look that fits the vision for your session.
Take Care of the Details: Small details can make a huge difference. Before your session, make sure things like your nails and toes are the way you want them to look, your outfits are all steamed and ironed, your shoes are broken-in if they’re brand new, and that you have all essentials for the session day such as snacks, bug spray, props for your session like a picnic basket, special baby items, ultrasound pictures, or flowers. These little preparations help you feel more relaxed when it’s time to begin.
What Happens During a Maternity Photography Session?
A lot of moms worry that they will feel awkward in front of the camera, or will not know how to pose. The truth is, most people are not naturally comfortable being photographed- and that is completely normal. A great maternity photographer should guide you through the experience while allowing moments to unfold naturally.
My approach to maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl focuses on gentle direction, movement, and direction rather than forced poses. Having an editorial style approach to maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl do call for some posing or intentional facial expressions, but it all goes in to the storytelling and artful meaning behind the images. These all come about through guiding moments that are already forming naturally.
The significance of planning and preparing ahead of the session also has a huge impact on how the session will go. If you are planning your session around a concept such as a picnic themed maternity session. You can expect to be doing just that. There is no thought in to that. If we are planning your session around an editorial concept such as having a fancy or statement making outfit in a field, you can expect a plan of more editorial style posing ahead of time as well.
How to Have Editorial Maternity Photos That Feel Timeless and Artistic
For expecting mothers who want something beyond traditional maternity portraits, an editorial maternity photography session creates images that feel elevated, intentional, and deeply personal.
Editorial maternity photos are inspired by the feeling of a fashion magazine spread while still preserving the emotion and connection of your pregnancy journey. They focus on thoughtful styling, beautiful composition, movement, and the unique story of the mother-to-be.
The goal is not to create images that feel overly posed or staged. Instead, editorial maternity photography blends artistry with authenticity—creating photographs that feel like a reflection of who you are during this incredible season of life. Here are a few ways to have an editorial maternity photography session:
Choose a meaningful vision for your session: The most memorable editorial maternity photos begin with a clear vision. Think about how you want this chapter of your life to feel when you look back on it years from now. Do you imagine something romantic and soft? Modern and fashion-inspired? Bold and artistic? Your location, wardrobe, lighting, and direction should all work together to create a cohesive story. For maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl, this might look like an intimate session in your home surrounded by meaningful details, or a dramatic portrait in a beautiful natural landscape to make a fashion statement.
Focus on emotion instead of perfect poses: A common misconception about editorial photography is that it is all about posing. In reality, the most powerful editorial maternity images often come from genuine emotion and subtle movement. instead of holding a pose for every single image, think about the emotion behind resting your hand on your belly, giving a soft gaze into the camera while you think about the meaning behind this special season of life. I like to think of these sessions as being iconic, the session is about you, about your growing baby, about your changing body that carries this life, about how elevated fashion can still be rocked on a pregnant belly. That is iconic.
Use beautiful light: Lighting is one of the most important elements of creating editorial maternity photos. Many photographers prefer soft, natural light because it creates dimension, warmth, and a timeless quality. In Jacksonville, golden hour—the hour before sunset—is especially beautiful for outdoor maternity sessions because the light creates a soft glow while adding depth to the images. Indoor sessions can also create an editorial feeling by using window light, shadows, and intentional composition to create a more intimate atmosphere.
Include thoughtful details: Editorial photography is about storytelling. The small details help create a complete visual story. Consider incorporating your engagement ring or wedding details, the nursery you prepared for your baby, an heirloom piece that you pass on to your baby, ultrasound images, books, or personal things from your home. the details are what make your images feel uniquely yours.
Work with a photographer who understands your vision: Creating editorial maternity photos requires more than a beautiful location or dress. It requires a photographer who understands how to combine art direction with genuine connection. The best editorial maternity sessions feel effortless because there is a balance between guidance and authenticity. You should feel supported throughout the experience while still having space for your personality and emotions to shine. For mothers looking for Jacksonville maternity photography with an editorial and documentary approach, the goal is to create images that do more than document your pregnancy—they preserve the feeling of this moment in time. Years from now, these photographs should bring you back to the anticipation, love, and excitement you felt while waiting to meet your baby.
How to Include Toddlers Naturally
If you have other children or toddlers that will be included in the session, I know you are probably worried about how they will do, or “behave”. My biggest advice is to not show up to the session with any expectations that you will get your toddlers to sit still or smile at the camera. That is the beauty of documentary style maternity photography. The session focuses on connection and is often kid-led. This means that if your toddler wants to run, we will run with them. If your toddler wants a snack? This is an opportunity for a more artful or editorial shot where your toddler is eating the snack but you are right beside them looking off into the sunset or running your fingers through their hair. A lot of moments that you think are distracting from the session with your toddlers, are actually great opportunities for storytelling. So don’t ever worry about how your toddlers will do!
Choosing Sunrise vs. Sunset Maternity Photos
When choosing between a sunrise or sunset timeframe for your maternity photos in Jacksonville Fl, a lot of factors come in to play. Things like location, time of year, and family schedules play a role when choosing. If you are wanting a beach maternity session in Jacksonville Fl, you could consider a sunrise session since the sun sets on the west which is opposite from the ocean on the east coast. This doesn’t mean choose sunrise for your beach session, because sunset photos at the beach are also very stunning in Jacksonville Fl or St. Augustine. However, having the sunrise on the horizon definitely adds a lot of beauty to the images.
How to Prepare Your Partner
We all know that our husbands can be the most difficult member of the session sometimes. Whether that’s getting them to agree to the session from the start, letting you take control of styling, or simply just not being a grump during the session. Then others of us have the husband that is overly excited and has all of the posing recommendations in his head, or is always saying “where do I look?”, “what do we do now?”. My advice on preparing your partner for maternity photos would be to stress to them the meaning and entire reason behind the photos. These photos are for you, for your baby to have memories to look back on them while they are in your belly, and for everyone to look back on to remember the feelings you felt during this season. Here are a few others reminders for the partners:
Have all pockets emptied prior to the start of the session
Any sunglasses to be taken off
Make sure the shoes match the outfits
Be open-minded for the session
Let the kids be kids
Are Maternity Photos Worth It?
Many mothers wonder if maternity photos are worth investing in. The answer is personal, but this season of life is incredibly temporary. Your pregnancy journey is filled with moments you will never experience in exactly the same way again. The anticipation, the excitement, and the connection with your baby before you meet them are worth remembering. Years from now, these images will not just show what you looked like while pregnant. They will remind you of who you were during that chapter of your family’s story.
Maternity photos are not only about documenting your bump—they are about preserving the beginning of your family’s story.
Other Common FAQ’s
What happens if it rains during my maternity session?
Florida weather can be unpredictable, so photographers typically monitor the forecast leading up to your session. If weather conditions are not ideal, your photographer may recommend rescheduling, choosing an indoor location, or adjusting the session plan. Flexibility helps ensure your final gallery reflects the beautiful experience you envisioned.
Do I need to know how to pose for maternity photos?
No. You do not need any modeling experience. A professional maternity photographer will guide you through natural prompts and direction throughout your session. The goal is to create images that feel authentic, yet artful.
How long do maternity photoshoots last?
Most maternity sessions last about 45-90 minutes depending on location, outfit changes, and whether or not your partner and/or children are involved. Time also depends on the specific package you book with your maternity photographer. Here is an example of a maternity photography package in Jacksonville.
What is the difference between posed maternity photos and documentary maternity photography?
Traditional posed maternity photography focuses primarily on carefully directed portraits, while documentary maternity photography focuses on connection, movement, and authentic moments. Many photographers blend both approaches to create images that feel both beautiful and meaningful. This is what is known as an editorial-style documentary maternity photo session.
How much do maternity photos cost?
The cost of maternity photos greatly depends on the photographer you book with. You can take a look at an example of the cost here for a maternity photo session. Other factors that can add to the overall cost of your session include outfit purchases, booking hair and makeup if desired, booking a studio if desired, and the purchase of any props.
